HAEJU SIGHTSSuyang Mountain is 7½ km northeast of Haeju. The mountain is 946 meters high and the area is 12 to 10 km.
Suyangsan Falls
Suyangsan Falls are 128 meters high and 12,5 meters wide. The water flows over steep cliffs and falls on a ridge halfway the cliffs. The nature here is very beautiful and varies with the seasons.
Suyangsan Fort
Near Changdae Peak during Koryo (936-1392) a mountain fort was built. The 8 km long walls connected the peaks. The walls are 6-7 meters high and 7-8 wide at the base and 3-4 meters wide at the top. Near Nam (South) Gate the walls are 14 meters wide. There are 14 bigger and smaller watchtowers.
Stone Icehouse
At the foot Suyangsan is a stone icehouse dating from around 1000, but rebuild in 1735. It is 28 with 4,5 meters and 6 meters high. The storeroom is built from stone blocks and covered with loam and peat.
Pagoda
Not far from the stonehouse and from Sami
Pavilion is a five stories pagoda, 4,6 meters high and built
from granite. It dates from the beginning of Koryo. The pagoda
used to be part of a temple.![]()
About 9 km southwest of Haeju and another 6 km
by boat you will get to the two small rocky Hyongje (Brother)
Islands. The tide is quite extreme here. At low tide there are
large beaches around the islands. It is possible to go here to
sunbathe, swim or have a picnic.![]()
Sokdamgugok (Pools on Rocks and Nine Valleys) is 12 km north of Haeju a the Sokdam River. Highlights in the landscape are:
Kwan Rock Rock looking like a horse-hair hat.
Hwa Rock Rock looking like a flower.
Unbyong Valley The most beautiful valley. In it is the Sohyon Academy, datig from the Li Dynasty. In the 16th century the famous scholar Li Ryul Gok was a teacher here.
Chohyop Valley Ideal for fishermen.
