Kuwol Moutains cover an area of 110 km2 adjoining Unryul and Anak Counties, in South Hwanghae Province. The main peak is Sahwang (854m), while other peaks are Inhwang, Juga, Insa (688m) and O (859m). By declaring part of the area as a nature reserve the government tries to protect the many varieties of plants and animals inhabiting Kuwol.
Kuwol Revolutionary Site
There is a monumental site dedicated to the activities of Kim Hyong Jik, the father of Kim Il Sung, in the area.
The Woljong Tempel in Kuwol was first built in
the middle of the 9th century, according to a sign at the temple
in 846. Later it was rebuilt and the present temple is from the
beginning of the Yi Dynasty (15th century). The main buildings
are Kungnakbo Hall, Wolmyong Hall, Myongbu Hall, Suwol Hall and
Manse Pavillion. You can find the temple in the Jol Valley, east
of Asa Peak and 5 km north-west of Woljong-ri (Anak District).

The Mausoleum of King Kogukwon in Oguk-ri (Anak District) dates from the middle of the 4th century. At that time the north of Korea was part of Koguryo (37 BC 668 AD). From that period this mausoleum is the largest and most sophisticated. It comprises an area of 81 m2 and has 7 sections. The mausoleum has very interesting murals depicting the daily life at the royal court.
The Mausoleum of King Kogukwon is also called
Mausoleum No.3. In Taechu-ri there are 2 other mausoleums. These
too are known for their murals showing the life of the people in
Koguryo. Mausoleum No.1 is of an aristocrat and
dates from the late 4th century. Mausoleum No.2
dates from the late 5th century..![]()
The Sinchon Museum is about 20 km from the
Kuwol Mountains. It is dedicated to the "crimes committed by
the US imperialists". During the Korea War the northern
troupes had to make a retreat. The area was occupied for 52 days
by US troops and allegedly 35,383 people, a quarter of the local
population was killed.![]()
Unryul is located at the west coast, South Hwanghae Province. It is the approach to the Kuwol Mountains. The hilly area is for 60 percent covered with forests.
Unryul also is a centre for iron mining and related industries and because of that the big Long-Distance Unryul Belt Conveyor was built.
The Unryul Revolution Museum is devoted
to the memory of the revolutionary Kim Hyong Jik.![]()
Kwail Fruit Farm
Kwail is located 30 km south-west of Unryul and
is the centre of the district with the same name. Kwail Fruit
Farm was set up in 1967. It covers 70 % of the arable land in
Kwail District. About 70 kinds of fruit are grown and processed
here, among which apples, pears and peaches.![]()
Jingang Lagoon
Jingang Langoon is located 8 km west of Kwail.
Here the coastline streches for 16 km. The langoon offers clean
water, white sandy beaches and nice surroundings.![]()
