Nampho West Sea Barrage

West Sea Barrage

About 15 km west of Nampho the 8 km wide river mouth of the Taedong is connected and dammed by the famous West Sea Barrage. It was completed in five years from 1981 to 1986. The barrage includes a dam, 3 locks (navigable for 50,000-ton ships), 36 sluices, 3 fishways and a few monuments. On the dam are a railway, a motorway and sidewalks.

The barrage is extremely important not only for traffic and water control, but also for the irrigation of a large area.To top of page


Nampho Sport Village

West of Nampho the Nampho Sport Village was opened in 1973. It comprises an area of 80 ha and has all kinds of sport facilities.To top of page


Wau Peninsula

West of Nampho is the Waudo District. On Wau Peak is a pavilion offering a view over the surroundings. In Waudo Park are recreational and sports facilities.To top of page


Thaesong Lake

About 20 km from Nampho, in the direction of Pyongyang, is Thaesong Lake. It was built in 1959 as a reservoir for irrigation and has a circumference of 30 km. The Tadong River feeds the lake with water.

Near the lake is the 18 holes and 5.2 km long Pyongyang Golf Course, with facilities like a sauna, restrooms and a restaurant.To top of page


Koguryo Mausoleums

Kangso is located northeast of Thaesong Lake and 28 km southwest of Pyongyang along the old motorway. Another 10 km to the north is Tokhung-dong. Here in 1976-77 the mausoleum was excavated. The mausoleum dates from 408. It has beautiful murals depicting the hero meeting 13 governors and showing knights on horseback shooting bows.

The Kangso Three Mausoleums are located 7 km west of Tokhung-dong, in Sammyo-ri. They are of the 7th century. These mausoleums also have magnificent murals depicting four mythical beings.
