RAJIN SONBONG UAM

RAJIN

Lying in the Rajin Bay, Rajin is 98 km northeast from Chongjin and is situated 14 km southwest of the seat of Sonbong and 5 km southeast of the Wonjong Bridge opposite China.

Today the city has a developed industries combined with oil processing, power, shipbuilding, mining, marine transports, agriculture and fishing. Besides, it has many other natural attractions.

Rajin Port

The port is surrounded by the Rajin Peninsula on the left and the mouth of the bay is encircled with the Taecho and Socho Islands. The highest wave is 6 m and average height is 2.1 m outside the Taecho Island while inside wave records zero meter. It covers an area of 380,000 square meters. The annual cargo handling capacity is 3 million tons and storage capacity 100,000 tons.

Landing Spot in Rajin Port

The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung ordered for the final attack on August 9, 1945. Therefore, one of the landing units of the KPRA (Korean People's Revolutionary Army) landed here.

Taecho Island

Taecho rises in front of Rajin Port. Uam is in the northeastern tip, Odaejin in the south.

Pipha Island

The bathing resort extends to the south in front of Pipha Island which is 13 km east of Rajin and 6 km southeast of Sonbong The white sandy beach is glistening in gleaming sunlight and gin-clear water which makes the island an excellent resort. Lying long from east to west, the island appears to be a peninsula adjacent to the inland. But it is connected with a beach and pier. Pipha, a musical instrument had given the island its name. Either it is called Phipa (an island preventing waves) or Korae (a whale on the sea). The Pipha Hotel is behind the island.

Sunoni Chemical Complex

It stands between Rajin and Sonbong. The complex comprises the Sungni Chemical Factory. Sonbong Port and June 16 Thermal Power Plant. It occupies an area of 2.233.000 square meters..To top of page


SONBONG

Sonbong is situated 14 km northeast of Rajin and 38 km southeast of the Wonjong Bridge. Today the entire Sonbong County is developed as a comprehensive farm with the form of all-people property. The county l's associated with "the revolutionary exploits of the great leader Comrade Kim Jong Il and Comrade Kim Jong Suk. a great revolutionary fighter". Sonbong has many historical relics and remains including the relics in the Kuipho-ri of one million years before.

Sonbong Port

The Sonbong Port has a specialized incoming oil berth and an oil products shipping berth and a service quay. It covers an area of 200.000 square meters.

Port Revolutionary Monument

The monument was built to convey down the revolutionary exploit of Comrade Kim Jong Suk. The Jung hyon Revolutionary Monument is near the monument.

Kulpho-Ri

It is situated at the foot of Mt. Tongbuk in Sopho Port Village, Kulpho-ri, 16 km northeast of Sonbong Port. Excavated here are the relics from Old Stone Age to the New Stone Age and Bronze Age, showing some 100,000 years of history.

Lagoon Sobon

Being the largest lagoon of Korea, it lies about 3 km northeast of Kulpho-ri. If covers an area of 16.12 square kilometers measuring the circumference of 41.2 km. Its south tip is adjacent to the sea, which makes the lagoon salty. The salty water flows in at high tide. Crucian carps, carps, sea wallrays and other fishes are benefited from the lagoon Trout, dace, whitebait and shrimp swim up and down the lagoon. Hundreds tons of shrimps are caught a year. UAM

Uam is situated 30 km northeast along the coast from the county seat. The Monument to the On-the-Spot Guidance of the Great Leader Comrade Kim II Sung was built on September 24, Juche 58 (1969). He climbed up the Mt. Uam on March 16, Juche 48 (1959) and taught to organize a general state farm combining stock farming with fish industry including freshwater fish farming.

Uam also has a sanctuary for sea birds and a sanctuary for seals..To top of page
