TUMAN SIGHTSHoeryong is situated in the northwest of North Hamgyong Province opposite Jilin, China with the Juman River in-between. It is one of the oldest cities in the northern region.
The average annual temperature is 5.5° C; January 12.6° C below zero and August 21.1° C. The average annual precipitation is 500 mm. It belongs to the region with small rainfalls.
The city has the River Tuman and big streams like the Hoeryong (46 km), Phalul and Poul Streams.
Hoeryang has turned into an area with a developed coal industry and agriculture.
Hoeryong is the natal site of dear Comrade Kim Jong Suk. As a small hill 800 m high rising in the center
of Hoeryong the Osan Hill is 500 m north of the Native House. The Osan Hill gets its name from the shape of a turtle. White apricot and azalea are famous in the hill. The unique spring view of the hill is "the Beauty of North Hamgyong Province".
A bronze statue of Comrade Kim Jong Suk neat in military uniform stands at the foot of hill. A revolutionary monument stands on the left, and behind, the Native House is preserved as it was.
It is situated at the foot of Ossan Hill, some 300 m northeast of the statue. Comrade Kim Jong Suk was born on December 24, 1917 and was living in this house till 1922. Preserved in the house are the poor household necessaries and other relics.

The statue was built in 1969 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of her death.
Museum of Kim Jong Suk
It stands at the foot of Osan Hill. It was opened in 1974 and rebuilt in 1982 to add the historical relics. Displayed in the 16 rooms are the life and exploits of Kim Jong Suk to the great leader Kim II Sung and to the comrades and the people.
Hoeryong Bridge
The bridge stands 5 km northwest of the city center. It connects Hoeryong with Langjing, China. A customs office is on the bridge.
People's Library
The library is a four-storev building with
space of 3,000 square meters in the Songchon-dong, 100 m
south of Osan Hill. With 300.000 volumes and 500 seats, it was
built in 1993 on the occasion of the 76th birthday of Comrade Kim
Jong Suk.![]()
Onsong is situated in the northwest of North Hamgyong Province opposite China with the River Tuman
in-between. The border measures 105 km.
It had been called Taonphyong or Jinsong in the
Koryo Dynasties but from the Ri Dynasty it was called Onsong,
meaning a flat land. The seat of Onsong was moved in 1970 from
Namyang when the Jongsong County was merged into the Onsong
County. The Onsong Plain extends to the riverside around the
county seat. It has an average temperature of 5.5° C with January
temperature of 12.5° C below zero and August temperature of 21° C. The average
annual precipitation is 562 mm.![]()
Five mountains rise 4 km north of the county seat. The highest point is a mountain called Wangjae (239m). It is associated with the relics of Kim Il Sung who came out here on March 22, 1933 with a unit of the KPRA and held a meeting to arouse the people to the victory in the anti-Japanese Revolutionary War. The Thamakgol Revolutionary Site, a liaison place in the Pang Valley and the remains of an ancient wall are preserved around the mountain.
Wangjaesan Grand Monument
The monument was built to convey down the revolutionary exploits of Kim Il Sung in the area. The monument comprises the statue of Kim Il Sung, the main group of sculptures, a Torch Tower and other group sculptures titled "Battle" and Support', a monument, a sculpture with "Hymns" and carved granite images beside the revolution museum. The Torch Tower is 66 m high with the torch 6 m high and 9 m wide.
Wangjaesan Revolution Museum
It was opened on October 13, Juche 64 (1975). It has a total floor space of 8.500 square meters with 16 rooms. Displayed there are materials of revolutionary activities of the great leader Comrade Kim II Sung from his early period of revolution to his home return.
Turu Peak Revolutionary Site
It is situated in the Turu Peak in the Turubong-ri, Onsong County, 8 km east of the seat. The name Juru was originated from its shape of round and flat. It is 286.5 m high. It was the place where Kim Il Sung founded the first Korean party organisation on October 1st, 1930.
Namyang Bridge
The bridge is located in Namyang-ri, Onsong
County, 13.5 km south of the county seat. It connects to Tumen,
China. The Namyang customs office is on the bridge.![]()
Saepyol County belongs to the North Hamgyong Province opposite Hunchun City, China with the River Tuman in-between. This county is nestled in forest-covered peaks within the height of 1,000 m. The wide Saepyol Plain (100 sq km) stretches out in the county. Saepyol has the largest coal area in the province. The county consists of a seat, 24 ri and a workers' district.
The average temperature is 5.8° C. January records 12° C below zero and August reaches 21.6° C. The average precipitation is 590 mm.
Ryuda Island
It rises about 4 km east of the county seat. As
the bisected island from the River Tuman, it is full of willow
trees which gave the island its name. It is associated with the
exploits of Kim II Sung who launched out into homeland. More than
80 modern dwelling houses are in the island.![]()
